Training
Seattle FlyDogs’ training focuses on recall, ball retrieval, hurdle jumping. We are a recreational and performance club. Although many of our dogs compete, Seattle FlyDogs’ training is not specific to competition Flyball. We meet every week teaching lessons and practicing as a club. We just want to have fun with our dogs!
Our workshops are are perfect for someone who has never done any dog sports or someone who has but wants to try flyball for the first time. Workshops are also great for intermediate dogs that want to work on skills.
Skill Descriptions & What to Bring
Please bring a recall toy, tug, or high value treat. It helps the trainers to have your dog in a harness. It also helps if you have a crate to keep your dog calm while others are learning. Flyball does come with an expectation that you will be running or light jogging with your dog in the lane and bringing lots of positive energy.
1. Moving Ball Fetch Drills & Recall – no hurdles
2. Away from Box, Recall over 4 Hurdles (no ball) (please bring a recall toy, tug, or high value treat). This includes running or light jogging.
3. Toward Box, Flat Ramp (in front of box), 4-paw turn
4. Toward Box, Flat Ramp with Dead Ball Retrieval 1-4 hurdles
5. Elevated Ramp (on box) Dead Ball Retrievals with 1-4 hurdles
6. Box Introduction, on ramp, with velcro, or full trigger – dependent on dog’s progress
Are you a ReadyDog? MightyDog? A HotDog? Or a SuperDog? Any level is welcome to take lessons in our club. Those who complete additional training in the fall could graduate to FlyDog!
Space is limited to 8 dogs per hour and priority registration is provided to beginners.

Once your payment has been received, you will receive a confirmation email and be added to our Workshop Roster.

A wait list will be created when classes fill.
Prequisites
Ball Drive is a fundamental for flyball.
Basic Skills required: come, sit, leave it, stay or wait – on and off leash.
Friendly Disposition around other dogs and humans is required to be successful in our program.
Recall 100%! You are responsible for controlling your dog. If your dog is running around YOU need to recall your dog. Please do not chase your dog – this will be an indication that your team still needs basic obedience training.
Behavioral Evaluation
During the class, your dog will be evaluated. If there is an issue, you will be asked to crate your dog or remove your dog from the room.
Most flyball dogs bark and come with other annoying traits! And many new flyball dogs refuse the ball in new spaces. IT IS OK! Behaviors like zoomies, barking at the air, annoying jumping, are OK!
Not ok behaviors might look like teeth showing, audible or low growling, lunging aggressively or fearfully, or hiding, and lack of recall off leash even if your dog is polite.
Payment Terms - Refunds
This is a limited space workshop. You may cancel your paid slot or slots for a full refund, if we receive the request by August 30. The wait list will be then used to fill the open slot.
Dogs that fail the behavioral evaluation will not be able to continue in class, but the handler may stay and audit and a 50% refund will be given. If you choose to leave and not audit, the refund is still provided at 50%.
All refund decisions beyond what is represented here is at the discretion of the Seattle FlyDogs.
Behavioral Issues
Flyball is a unique sport in that many humans and dogs are working together – unlike solo sports that you might be familiar with.
Failing our in person assessment is rare since you are reading the requirements and agreeing that you are ready. But, it could happen if your dog reveals surprise reactivity behaviors to other dogs that are off leash, on leash, playing with toys, receiving treats, humans running, balls flying, barking, hats, birds, horses, and other loud noises. If you are worried, then listen to your instincts, but feel free to reach out to us through the web site and we can discuss ahead of time.
